World Sprint Duathlon Championships, 12 Jun 2022
My preparation for my first world championships has been by no means perfect. Since qualifying in October 2021, I’ve balanced a running injury and starting my career as a doctor with pushing hard with my training. It’s not been easy but it’s paid off.
I performed a run, bike, run I was proud of. I felt like a deserved to be there which I have very much doubted at times, despite overwhelming support from family and friends. Not to mention my coach Tim, from Caternery Coaching, who has been by my side all the way.
The community of athletes out in Targu Mures, Romania was truly something special. The race was a totally new challenge in terms of the course spec (draft legal city centre - cobbles, hill sprints, sharp corners and all!), the heat, the sheer volume of competitors from all across the globe…and what an incredible privilege it was to be out there doing my favourite things.
Unfortunately post-race was bitter sweet as I found out that myself, along with 40 other athletes, could not be listed on the final results due to course error. The final stretch of my last run, a mere 700m, was not included after crossing the finish line too early. Whilst I completed the full course as my competitors it was too late to rectify timings as strictly regulated by the race officials. Clearly I wasn’t the only athlete affected by a last minute course change made after the race briefing.
In any case, this race has been the most incredible experience, a huge amount to take away from, be inspired by, and cherish forever!
