Sonning Common 10k, 5 Oct 2025
Coming to the end of my off season and 5 days after giving blood, I had no expectations going into this race. It was a little bit of fun at a local race with friends both running and supporting. Not a flat 10k by any stretch, the first 5k are very much uphill (albeit gradual inclines), with the second 5k being flat with some downhill moments.
I placed myself just ahead of the 50 minute pacer, knowing that I had been in good running shape prior to giving blood, but not to do anything too crazy this weekend. I set off nice and steady and tried not to get carried on by everyone around me. The first 2k I held my pace and was able to settle in to a nice rhythm. From kilometer 3-5 there is a gradual incline, a small downhill respite, then a long drag. Here I allowed myself some time and eased off the pace a little, not wanting to push the climb too hard. I felt good and was grateful for the 5k water station, taking on some water and allowing myself a little breather. Then onto the fun of net downhill for the second 5k. We were able to make some good time and enjoyed the kms ticking by.
Finally onto the home stretch – a nice flat road and able to give it some beans. Rolling in with a time of 49:12 - a new 10k PB! Delighted after having given blood 5 days ago!
